Lose Weight by Eating Saturated Fat

What if I told you that I’d been living on saturated fats for the past three days during a coconut oil detox? I’ve been eating up to ten tablespoons per day and felt absolutely fine. I’m passionate about coconut oil. I use it for oil pulling each morning, make my own toothpaste with it, and consume several teaspoons throughout the day. There are so many ways to lose weight, but the food manufacturers fail to mention that not all saturated fats are created equal. Most of us know that we need to cut down on unhealthy fats, but cutting ALL fats out of our diet is an unhealthy choice. We can lose weight by eating saturated fat, and this article will teach you how.

Why Fats are Necessary

Several vitamins that we consume, including A, D, E and K, are fat-soluble, which means that we need to eat fats to support the body in producing these essential fatty acids. Fat also protects the internal organs, maintains healthy skin, and supports healthy brain development in children and newborns. The American Heart Association recommends that we get up to 35 percent of calories from fat. Fat help us to feel fuller for longer, although they are calorific.

Now that we know that fats are essential for optimum health, we must determine which are the healthiest types of fats. Firstly, which oil do you believe is healthier? Saturated fat or polyunsaturated fat? Secondly, do you know that trans fats are not saturated fat? If you chose polyunsaturated fat as the healthier fat, read on to learn why vegetables oils can contribute toward weight gain and a host of other nasties.

Trans Fatty Acids Contribute Toward Heart Disease

Trans fatty acids have long been considered a saturated fat, and this is the reason why most of us have been scared into eating a low fat diet. However, what the heart disease researchers fail to disclose to the public is that eating a diet high in coconut oil, which is primarily saturated fat, can lower the risk of heart disease. Trans fatty acids are found in processed foods like pastries, cakes, and cookies. Even margarine is no substitute for the extremely healthy fat short chain fatty acid called butter. Margarine is grey before colorants are added. I was shocked to read this advice by Heart Foundation advocating margarine as a healthier choice over butter. Cholesterol is absolutely necessary for the health of the body, especially the brain. In fact, researchers have discovered that patients with brain degenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease have low levels of cholesterol in the brain. Butter is rich in the fat-soluble Vitamin A, and even minerals like manganese and zinc. It also contains the anti-cancer compound called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Switch to natural sources of saturated fats like butter and tropical oils. They are excellent for frying, as they can be heated to very high temperature without risk of oxidation.

The Lowdown on Saturated Fats

Saturated fat is often only consumed as lauric, stearic, and palmitic acid, and each of these fatty acids are no cause for concern. Animal fats contain stearic acid, which has no effect on cholesterol levels, while lauric and palmitic acid does raise cholesterol, but also raises high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol—healthy levels, while lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. This is great news in the field of research for heart disease, as the public need to learn the truth.

Both butter and tropical oils contain a different fatty acid structure than vegetable oils and olive oil. Butter is a short chain fatty acid, while coconut and palm oil are medium chain fatty acids. The body can better break down short and medium chain fatty acids to use as energy. Therefore, if you switch to using short or medium chain fatty acids for your baking and frying, you can look forward to possible weight loss, due to the increase in metabolism. Coconut oil and butter are still high in calories, so it is important to consider your daily calorific allowance. Research has also discovered that eating coconut oil can increase the metabolism by up to 48 percent.

Polyunsaturated Oils are Unhealthy

It is so easy to believe the healthcare experts, including dieticians and nutritionists, as they are in the business of making us healthier, so if a nutritionist told you to stop cooking with polyunsaturated oils and cook with saturated fats instead, what would you say? The truth is that we have all been lied to. After reading Bruce Fife’s The Coconut Oil Miracle, I want to firmly apologize to coconut oil for believing it was a bad fat during my teenage years. We only need to look at the levels of obesity in the world to know that we are eating the wrong types of fat. We must start cooking meals from scratch, and avoid processed fats, which are loaded with trans fatty acids.

A study on animals discovered that a rich diet of polyunsaturated fats suppressed their ability to learn, whilst also inhibiting the health of their immune system. There are high levels of myocardial infarctions in the United States, which is caused by an excessive consumption of polyunsaturated oils. Once heated, polyunsaturated fats can release free radicals. Another study was carried out by a plastic surgeon who discovered that the women who consumed higher level of vegetable oils had an increased level of wrinkles, compared to the women who ate natural fat sources like those found in animals fats.

Educating Ourselves on Good Fat Health

In truth, we must re-educate ourselves about saturated fats, because they are healthy. Yes, they are calorific, like all vegetable and olive oils, but we need to learn how the body breaks them down. Short chain fatty acids, like those found in butter, are broken down rapidly and turned into energy. This means that there is less of a likelihood that the saturated fat will contribute toward weight gain. Coconut oil is a medium chain fatty acid that is another good source of energy for the body. Long chain fatty acids, like those found in olive oil, are difficult for the body to break down, so an over consumption of these fats could contribute toward weight gain, when used regularly. However, please continue to eat olive oil, as it is a good source of mono-unsaturated fats and excellent for heart health. However, if we cut out the unhealthy trans fats and replace them with healthy fats, we can lose weight by eating saturated fat.

Four reasons to love coconut oil

Few foods, with the possible exception of eggs, have had their reputations so completely demolished in the 20th century as coconut oil. Even as late as the 1990s, this edible oil, which is extracted from the kernels or flesh of matured coconuts, continued to be demonized in the media as a great contributor to heart disease due to its significant saturated fat content.

Fortunately, modern society is beginning to understand that the saturated fat present in coconut oil is, contrary to popular belief, actually highly beneficial. This understanding was, in part, due to a growing body of evidence suggesting that populations who consumed large quantities of coconut oil, such as the Tokelauan and Kitavan people of the South Pacific, were among the healthiest people on Earth. This evidence prompted a growing number of scientists to investigate the benefits of coconut oil.

Coconut oil is an unbeatable source of saturated fat

According to Self's "NutritionData," one tablespoon of coconut oil contains 14 grams of total fat, of which 12 grams are saturated. Whereas the saturated fat found in most other foods, such as meat and cheese, is mostly comprised of long-chain triglycerides (LCTs), the saturated fat found in coconut oil is mostly comprised of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). Unlike LCTs, which need to be broken down in the intestines before our bodies can use them as fuel, MCTs are metabolized extremely quickly and rarely stored in the body as fat cells. These MCTs are the source of all of the benefits listed below.

Coconut oil can reduce abdominal obesity

Due to its concentrations of MCTs, long-term consumption of coconut oil has actually been linked to weight loss, not weight gain. A Brazilian study published in Lipids in 2009, found that women who consumed 30 milliliters of coconut oil daily for a 12 week period experienced a reduction in BMI and waist circumference. A group of women who consumed equal amounts of soybean oil, which contains LCTs, during the same period did not experience the same benefits.

Coconut oil kills bacteria, viruses and fungi

Almost 50% of the MCTs found in coconut oil is lauric acid, a 12-carbon saturated fatty acid that our bodies convert into monolaurin. Monolaurin is one of the natural world's greatest antivirals, antibacterials and antifungals. In fact, Dr. Joseph Mercola claimed that monolaurin can destroy lipid-coated viruses, such as measles, herpes, influenza, most pathogenic bacteria and even HIV. These claims are now being studied by science. One study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food in 2007, found that coconut oil is extremely effective at killing Candida albicans, a common yeast infection in humans. Another study published in the Journal of Bacteriology in 2000 discovered that coconut oil can help kill Staphylococcus aureus, which is a common cause of skin conditions and respiratory diseases.

Coconut oil can maintain mental health

It is a well-known fact that inadequate amounts of our brain's main fuel supply, glucose, is the leading cause of cognitive disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia. According to researcher Dr. Mary Newport, coconut oil can help prevent these diseases due to the high concentrations of ketone bodies in its MCTs, which function as an alternative fuel source. "Humans do not normally have ketone bodies circulating and available to the brain unless they have been starving for a couple of days or longer, or are consuming a ketogenic (very low carbohydrate) diet, such as Atkins," says Newport. "In Alzheimer's disease, the neurons in certain areas of the brain are unable to take in glucose due to insulin resistance and slowly die off... If these cells had access to ketone bodies, they could potentially stay alive and continue to function."

Everyone Must Must Read This: The effect of strawberries on cholesterol

Strawberries are one of the most popular summer fruits available. Because of their short growing season, they are normally quick-frozen to preserve their nutrients and to make them available during the months when they are out of season. When frozen correctly, strawberries retain the majority of their nutrients without losing flavor or fiber.

Beneficial nutrients

Strawberries are full of antioxidants. With an abundance of anthocyanins, flavonoids and ellagitannins in their nutritional arsenal, strawberries are thought to offer many benefits as an anti-inflammatory. They also have the capability of helping to control blood glucose levels. Vitamin C, manganese and folate are found in ample amounts in strawberries, not to mention its high fiber content. A strawberry's high fiber content is part of the reason why it is so effective in helping to control cholesterol.

Fiber interacts with molecules of oil and fat and carries them out of the body, preventing them from entering the circulatory system and collecting in the body as fat and in the arteries as plaque. Fiber works along with the other nutrients contained in strawberries to improve cardiovascular health and keep blood flowing freely throughout the body. Cholesterol can cause blockages in blood vessels that hamper the flow of blood and put stress on the cardiovascular system. Eating the right amount of strawberries each day can help reduce the level of cholesterol in the body and prevent it from causing blockages.

Amount needed

Studies have revealed that people who do not have a weight problem can benefit from adding strawberries to their diet just as much as those who are obese. Depending on a person's size, weight and overall physical condition, consuming anywhere from 110 to 500 grams of strawberries every day can sufficiently reduce a person's cholesterol by as much as 28 percent. While consuming strawberries in their freshest state provides the most nutrients, this versatile fruit does not begin to lose its nutritive value until almost 48 hours after it has been harvested. This gives a person plenty of time to clean, prepare and consume them.

Form

Strawberries can be consumed several ways and still provide maximum benefits. Fresh, frozen, dried and in powder form, strawberries are capable of reducing cholesterol levels no matter how they are consumed. Fresh strawberries can be eaten in desserts or as a healthy snack. Frozen strawberries are ideal for cooking and can be used in almost any recipe that asks for fresh fruits. Dried strawberries can also be used in recipes that call for fresh strawberries. Powdered strawberries can be added to yogurts, ice cream and fruit smoothies to improve flavor and add an abundance of nutrients.

Strawberries are proving to be quite effective at boosting the immune system, regulating blood glucose levels and lowering the amount of cholesterol in the blood stream. Adding them to a person's diet not only reduces cholesterol but also boosts the levels of other much needed nutrients.

Discover the Truth About Coconut Oil and Its Many Health Benefits

Coconut oil has been a common sight in Asian and Pacific households for ages, but why is it that today all over the world the health benefits of coconut oil are being rediscovered? Did you know that there was a time in history when western countries, like the US and Canada, were huge consumers of coconut oil? But what happened back then?

How Did Coconut Oil Disappear From Our Kitchen Tables

Cardiovascular diseases where skyrocketing and becoming the primary cause of mortality in the sixties. The corn and soy oil production, supported by the American Heart Association, set up a negative propaganda campaign to spread the word that coconut oil was dangerous for your body due to the high saturated fat level.

You’ve probably all been told a thousand times that saturated fats are bad for your health and lead to all sorts of diseases like high cholesterol, obesity, cardiovascular diseases and Alzheimer’s. But why is it that since then Americans who suffer from cardiovascular diseases, obesity, high cholesterol and Alzheimer’s has been rising while they made the switch to hydrogenated polyunsaturated oils?

In fact multiple studies on Pacific and Asian populations, where the intake of coconut oil is high, show nearly no cardiovascular diseases and they are in perfect health. So obviously the coconut oil is not to be blamed for the clogged arteries and other cardiovascular diseases that Americans are struggling with.
But unfortunately the poorer tropical oil industry couldn’t afford to put up a campaign against the negative propaganda supported by the rich American soy and corn industry. Competition and a lot of money from the vegetable oil industry expelled the use of coconut oil, but finally it is gaining back its popularity. And you’re about to discover why we should give it a second life.

Not All Saturated Fats Are Bad For Your Health

Coconut oil consist mostly out of lauric acid, a small medium chain saturated fatty acid or triglyceride. Lauric acid has a more neutral effect on heart health when compared with other long-chain saturated fats found in meat and dairy. Medium- chain fats are easily metabolized into energy and less likely to be stored as fat within your body.

Not all fats are “created” equally. Some occur naturally and others are man-made through a process called hydrogenation. Those fats are known as trans-fats or hydrogenated polyunsaturated fats. They should be avoid like the plague. Trans-fats have been closely associated with heart disease because they not only increase LDL or ‘bad’ cholesterol but impede the body’s ability to utilize HDL or ‘good cholesterol. Most common vegetable and seed oils contain long chain fatty acids. Those larger molecules are more difficult to breakdown and therefore stored as fat. The only benefit of those trans-fats are its food shelf life and corporate profits

Discover 9 Amazing Health Benefits Of Coconut Oil

Amazing Benefits of Coconut

One of my all-time favorite fruits is the coconut. The Pacific Islanders believe that it is the cure for all illness, which is why the palm tree (from which coconuts are grown) is known as “The Tree of Life.” Coconut oil is thought to possess healing properties above and beyond that of any other dietary oils.

Eating coconuts are excellent for one’s immunity. They are antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-parasitic, meaning they kill harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Because of that, if you consume coconut in any of its various forms (whether it be raw coconut, coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut butter, etc.), it can help treat some of mankind’s worst and most resilient of illnesses such as influenza, giardia, lice, throat infections, urinary tract infections, tapeworms, herpes, gonorrhea, bronchitis, and numerous other ailments caused by microbials.

Whether you’re eating the meat, drinking the juice, or consuming it as oil, coconuts are a delicious and nutritious source of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. It has tons of calcium, potassium, and magnesium, as well as plenty of electrolytes. In fact, coconut water is known to have the same electrolyte levels as human plasma, and has even been used for plasma transfusions!

The oil is excellent for keeping one young and beautiful. Its antioxidant properties slow down the aging process by protecting the body from harmful free radicals. I like to put a little bit of coconut oil on my skin every day to keep it nice and smooth, as well as free from dryness. I apply it onto my skin before showering. The hot water opens my pores, allowing the oil to absorb through my skin more efficiently. Just make sure to wipe the bottom of the tub when you’re done, since the coconut oil can be slippery. Coconut oil is also known to treat skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.

It also helps hair to become more healthy and lustrous. My hair has always been a bit on the dry, thin side, so I like to put coconut oil in it. On occasion, I’ll leave the oil in my hair overnight (covering my pillow with a towel so as to not get it oily) and wash it out in the morning. I’m always satisfied to find my hair is moist, radiant, and shiny. It’s a great alternative if you don’t want to use a leave-in conditioner.

Eating coconuts also supports the development of strong, healthy bones and teeth. It does this by improving the body’s ability to absorb calcium and magnesium. It also prevents osteoporosis, a condition in which the bones become thin and fragile and lose their density. This makes coconuts a good, healthy alternative for those who are lactose intolerant, but still want to have strong bones and teeth. Those who prefer a vegan diet can benefit from it as a good source of protein and fatty acids.

When coconut oil was first brought to the U.S., there was a lot of negative hype about it because it contains high levels of saturated fat. People were concerned that it increased cholesterol and contributed to heart disease—but this is a myth. It actually lowers cholesterol and reduces the chances of heart disease. This is because its fat content is simply changed into energy, lessening the likelihood of fat buildup in the arteries and heart.
