5 Juicing Recipes for Energy

Your body needs much more than simple calories to produce strong and stable energy. Vitamins, minerals, enzymes and various other nutrients all have a vital role to play in energy production and a deficiency in any number of them can have a serious impact on how you feel.

Fresh vegetables and fruits are some of the best sources of the nutrition you need to perform at your best. But how do we fit enough of them into our diet? That’s where juicing comes in.

The unique nature of freshly made fruit and vegetable juices makes juicing especially effective, particularly for those that often find their energy levels low or fluctuating wildly due to the effects of sugar or caffeine.

Here's why juicing is such a great source of energy for your body, especially compared to caffeine or sugar. Following this are five juicing recipes to power up your cells, improve your concentration and focus and enhance your overall vitality.

Sugar, Caffeine or Fresh Juice - Which Is Better for Energy?

Sugar Energy
Many people start the day with sugary breakfast cereals or white bread (virtually equivalent to sugar to your body and possibly even worse). These simple and unnatural carbohydrates are digested extremely quickly and hit your bloodstream with large amounts of sugar in as little as 15 minutes.

You'll often see processed cereals trumpeting on their packaging that they are a source of energy. But is this really the type of energy you want? You may feel a temporary burst, or even a little wired or high, but the effect is short-lived.

Simple sugar energy quickly overloads your bloodstream with far too much glucose for it to handle. In fact, it's such a threat to your body's health that it produces the hormone insulin to shuttle the excess sugar out of your bloodstream for storage.

Insulin is the fat storing hormone. It can store some of the excess sugar you've absorbed from the bread or cereal in your liver as glycogen. But once that's full it can be converted to triglycerides and stored as body fat.

In removing the excess sugar from your bloodstream, insulin often does its job too well and leaves you with low blood sugar. So just a few hours after a concentrated simple carbohydrate meal, your energy is gone, you feel tired, sometimes lightheaded and usually hungry again.

To top it all off, insulin has been using that time to store more body fat and effectively prevent stored fat cells from being used as energy. For a better understanding of the process and a simple solution see the page on cutting carbs to lose weight.

Caffeine Energy
Many more of us start the day with a shot of coffee and if you are addicted to caffeine it will usually make you feel better and more energized. It's important to realize though that this is simply because it temporarily negates the effects of caffeine withdrawal, something millions of people in America go through every morning.

Research is showing that once you replace coffee with healthier alternatives and are no longer addicted to caffeine you perform better without it than you did when you needed it just to wake up. There’s a plan for just how to do that here, with a replacement that tastes similar to coffee but is actually good for you.

Even in the medium-term, caffeine becomes less and less effective as a drug and you end up needing more and more to get the same buzz from it. For many people that 'buzz' has long since gone beyond a little extra energy and would be better described as tension and anxiety.

Coffee can also strip your body of important minerals like magnesium, increase acidity and potentially cause gastrointestinal problems like bloating, cramps and poor digestion. All of these regular side effects can have a seriously negative impact on your energy levels.

Here's more about the seven health problems with coffee and how to avoid them if you're ready to make a change.
Fresh Juices for Energy
Freshly made juices like these are one of the simplest and best ways to improve your energy levels. This is because the nutrition in freshly juiced fruit and vegetables is very easily assimilated, energizes your cells and gives your body what it really needs to perform at its best.

Vegetables and fruit juices are concentrated sources of electrolyte minerals like magnesium, calcium, potassium and sodium, so important for metabolism, stable blood sugar levels, muscle and brain function and numerous cellular processes involved in energy production throughout your body.

Trace minerals like iron, manganese, selenium and zinc are also vital for creating and maintaining energy within your body and juicing a variety of produce is a great way to cover a lot of these nutritional bases.

Pro-vitamin A, vitamin C and B vitamins in particular are vital for stable mental and physical energy. When levels are low your body and brain will soon suffer but fresh juices are a simple way to increase your intake of natural and highly absorbable vitamins.

There are also a rich range of enzymes, antioxidants and other phytonutrients to be found in making up your own juices and the five recipes coming up next are great examples of how easy it is to improve your health with homemade juice.

If you want to increase your energy levels and improve your overall vitality then juicing offers a concentrated and effective way to give your body the nutrition it needs.

Juicing Instructions
With the five recipes ahead and any other juices you'd like to make up there are a few simple factors to keep in mind:

Organic produce is preferred where possible, particularly with carrots, celery, cucumber, apples, berries and greens.
If you can't find organic then wash and scrub your fruit and veggies in warm water and a splash of apple cider vinegar to minimize waxes and sprays.
It's recommended to add the juice of a lemon or lime and a couple of ice cubes to the collection container of your juicer before you start juicing. This minimizes oxidization and improves the nutrient retention of your juice.
Once your produce is washed and chopped to fit through the juicer feed, simply started up your juicer and steadily push it all through. It’s best to alternate soft and then hard, such as tomatoes followed by carrots, to minimize heat and get the most juice into your cup.
As soon as it's done, stir it up and drink immediately for the best taste and most health benefits. While lemon juice will give you a little longer, freshly made juices are meant to be enjoyed straight away.
Now onto the recipes.

7 Surprising Celery Juice Benefits for Your Body

Crunchy celery isn’t the most obvious superfood vegetable, but it’s actually surprisingly good for you. These celery health benefits are further magnified when you juice it and can receive a much larger dose of its powerful nutrients.

This article covers why celery juice is so good for preventing inflammation and disease, protecting your cardiovascular system, lowering your risk of cancer, cleansing your body, improving your skin, recovering from exercise of stress and even helping you get to sleep at night.

The Top 7 Reasons to Juice Celery

1. Reduce Inflammation in Your Body

Inflammatory diseases like arthritis, osteoporosis, gout and even asthma can respond very well to regular celery juice in your diet. This may be in large part due to two special compounds called luteolin and polyacetylenes, both present in large amounts in celery.

Luteolin is a antioxidant flavonoid with strong anti-inflammatory properties. It has been shown in scientific studies to have a powerful inhibitory effect on certain enzymes which activate genes responsible for the inflammation response.

Polyacetylenes also reduces inflammation by lowering levels of inflammatory prostaglandins in your body. Arthritis sufferers in particular are believed to benefit from high food sources of polyacetylenes. Raw celery juice is a great source, as is carrot juice and related vegetables like parsnip, parsley and fennel.

2. Lower Blood Pressure and Improved Cardiovascular Health

Another interesting nutrient in celery juice called phthalide relaxes smooth muscles inside your blood vessels, thus helping to reduce high blood pressure. The phthalide in celery is also believed to help lower LDL cholesterol for better heart health.

Coumarins, found in high levels in freshly juiced celery help reduce the effect of stress hormones like cortisol in your body. Too much cortisol tends to constrict blood vessels, potentially leading to hypertension and putting strain on your whole circulatory system.

Celery also contains a bioflavonoid called apigenin that acts as an anti-inflammatory within your cardiovascular system and promotes blood vessel expansion, thereby lessening high blood pressure and hypertension.

3. Celery juice as a Cancer Fighter

Full of powerful antioxidants and anti-cancer compounds like flavonols, phenolic acids and furanocoumarins, celery juice has a lot of potential as a cancer fighter.

Two substances in particular found in celery are being studied as a cancer treatment. The flavonoids apigenin and luteolin have been shown to help prevent the spread of cancer in scientific studies

While research on individual compounds is interesting, it’s far better to see celery juice’s cancer preventing potential for its broad range of anti-carcinogenic antioxidants and other beneficial substances. Isolates are useful for drug manufacturers, but the nutrients in natural foods work best in synergy with each other.

4. Cleansing and Detoxifying

Celery juice is a great internal cleanser and detoxifier for your body. Highly alkalizing and hydrating, many nutrients in freshly juiced celery are particularly cleansing for your kidneys.

Raw juice recipes containing celery as essential ingredient are even recommended for treating kidney stones. They can also be a powerful diuretic for removing excess water weight from your body and flushing out toxins more effectively.

5. Skin Benefits of Celery Juice

Celery contains a wide range of nutritional elements for enhancing your skin. Aside from all of the various antioxidants already mentioned, it is high in vitamin K for preserving skin’s firmness and elastic quality and has vitamin C, vitamin A and B vitamins for healthy skin tone.

6. Recovery Juice

After exercise or even a busy and stressful day, your body is often dehydrated and low in important electrolytes that keep it functioning correctly.

Celery juice, soon after a workout or when you get home from the office, can be especially replenishing and hydrating. It contains high levels of natural sodium and potassium electrolytes that play their part in keeping the energy connections in your cells working smoothly.

7. Sleep Enhancer

The aforementioned celery juice benefits for high blood pressure, reducing hypertension and lowering stress hormones, alongside its high levels of electrolytes are probably a big part of why it is often suggested for enhancing relaxation and sleep.

Celery juice also contains magnesium, known as the calming mineral. Magnesium deficiency can lead to many health problems, including difficulty relaxing and getting to sleep so make sure you get enough of it.

Choosing Celery and How to Juice It

Look for celery for juicing with green leaves and firm stalks. The darker the green in the stalk, the stronger the celery flavor and likely the more nutrition available within the vegetable itself.

Celery stalks are a perfect size for juicing, but they should be soaked in warm water with a splash of apple cider vinegar to minimize sprays. Once you’ve cleaned them, simply push them down through a good juicer like this and mix them with other complementary vegetable juices.

There are several good celery juicing recipes here, but if you’re already juicing but haven’t tried celery yet then make sure you give it a go. Celery juice is tasty and refreshing and, as the seven points above show, particularly good for your overall health.
