How to Determine if an Egg is Fresh

Fresh egg is considered to be a very important ingredient when you are baking something scrumptious and savory on special occasions for your family. But what is the worst thing that could happen to you while preparing your delicious meal? Finding out that the egg you just added-in is not fresh rather it is a bad egg and now you have to discard all the material, you have been working on so diligently – that’s not only annoying but equally awful as well as it leads to wastage of time, material and money.

But do you know this situation can be keep from happening if you could determine the freshness of eggs before adding them into the material. Yes this could be done very easily at home as there are various methods available to test the freshness of an egg.

Now without wasting any time, let’s move to the next section where different measures are listed to check whether an egg is good to consume or not.

Water and bowl test for freshness
Follow the below mentioned instruction to pull of this test:

Get a bowl which should be deep enough to contain water twice the size of an egg so it could be soaked completely into it
Carefully put and lower egg into the bowl
Now there are 4 possibilities which can happen:

If an egg immediately sinks to the bottom and lies flat on the side of it then this means that the air cell within the egg is very small; hence it is fresh and perfectly fine to use.
If an egg is slightly older than it will lie on the bottom of bowl but in a different angle. Moreover it will also bob-up and down rather than being still
If the egg begins to float and stand upright in a way where smaller end will look at the bottom of bowl whilst broader end looks upward towards the surface then you could say this egg is still good to consume; however, it is about 3 weeks old now and due to the entrance of more air in the egg shell, it has started to lose its freshness

When you see that the egg you put into the bowl has begun to float on the surface and it does not touch the bottom of that bowl then it can be concluded that, it is a bad egg and should be discarded at once. Bad eggs tend to give pungent smell and they are also very light weighted

Why this test works?
This test works because eggshells are very porous and when more air enters the shell then its life begins to diminish. The more air enters the egg the more less-favorable-to-eat it becomes.

Cracked egg and plate test
To do this test, you would have to break the egg into a flat plate or flat surface instead of soaking or breaking it into a deep bowl. If the egg is fresh then:

Yolk of the egg would have round and compact appearance while it will also be in still position. Moreover, the white of the egg which is also known as albumen will be thick and it would also stay closer to the yolk
If the albumen has cloudy coloring then it means the egg is extra fresh as this cloudiness indicates the presence of carbon dioxide in it. However, the egg white tends to become more transparent with time due to the dispelling of carbon dioxide
If you see the yolk is flatter which could be broken easily and which also has thinner white, spreading quite easily far over the plate then this means, it is a less fresh egg
Lastly, bad egg would have a flat yolk and its albumen will be runny just like water. if this is the case then egg should be discarded and not to be consumed
Sloshing test
Another test to check the freshness of an egg is through slushiness. Now what you need to do to conduct this test?

Pick up an egg and bring it close to your ear
Shake the egg
Now determine what kind of sounds you hear when shaken? If the sound is sloshy then it is a bad egg, you can discard it else if the sound is not sloshy then you can consume it
It is that simple!

Blood Spots in egg

At times what happens, when you break an egg then you realize there are some reddish brownish spots in it which are also known as blood or meat spots. People often tend to avoid eating such kind of eggs but to break the ice, let me tell you that such eggs are safe to eat as these eggs show the particular freshness of them as the redness fades with age. Moreover, these tiny spots only represent blood vessels which have been ruptured when egg formed.

10 Surprising Household Uses for Vinegar

Vinegar is the timeless combination of acetic acid and water that has become a well-known liquid in practically every household. Many people subject its use to culinary purposes, but there are actually a surprisingly wide variety of medical, scientific, and domestic uses. Try hacking your daily routine with the clever uses of white vinegar listed below. Using white vinegar is a good way to avoid using harsh chemicals and it’s also economical and environmentally friendly.

1. Remove Wrinkles from your Clothes

You don’t need to bust out an ironing board every time you want clothes to look smooth and presentable. Vinegar can be used as an effective method of removing wrinkles from your clothing. In a spray bottle mix together 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water. Hang up the clothing and spritz it with the mixture and let the clothes hang and air dry. After waiting a few minutes you’ll find that the wrinkles are gone and you’re left with some spiffy looking fabric.

2. Get Rid of Foul Trash Can Odor

Your trash bin most likely won’t smell like roses after a stint of collecting garbage. Sometimes the reek will permeate the bin and stink up your home even when there isn’t garbage in it. This problem can easily be solved with a piece of bread and vinegar.

Soak the bread in vinegar and place it on top of a paper towel at the bottom of your trash can before bed. When you wake up and remove the bread it will have successfully eliminated the putrid stench. Feel free to try this anywhere in your home where a foul odor is lingering.

3. Unclog Your Drain

When bathtub and sink drains clog up it can lead to some serious headaches. The blockage is stubborn and usually requires a visit to the store and investment in costly products. The answer to your problems could be as simple as a grade school science experiment with vinegar and baking soda.

To unclog your drain with vinegar start by boiling a cup of water and pouring it down the blocked drain. Next pour in a half cup of baking soda and wait a few minutes. Mix together a cup of hot water with a cup of vinegar and add it to the drain then wait about ten minutes. To finish it off you should add a final cup of boiling water and your drain should be cleared of sludge and flowing like new.

4. All-Purpose Cleaner

It seems a little ridiculous that so many cleaning products are available in stores when they can almost all be replaced with a little bit of vinegar. To make an effective all-purpose cleaner, start with an empty spray bottle and fill ⅓ of it with vinegar. Fill the rest of it with water and a squirt of dish soap (whichever scent you like the best) and give it a shake. This homemade cleaner works great on practically any surface and is a lot more cheap and safe than most cleaners found in stores. You can also find here how to make sanitizing natural household cleaner using essential oils.

5. Pet Repellent

Tired of cats wandering around your home and garden like it’s their stomping ground? Or perhaps you’ve got a pet that scratches at your furniture and sheds its hair all over it. Since a pet’s sense of smell is so keen, spraying a little vinegar will keep the animals away from certain areas. If you’re worried about the vinegar affecting plant life or ruining furniture you can dilute the mixture with water. Placing a vinegar soaked rag in certain areas will also suffice.

6. Cleaning Cookware

Pots and pans are vulnerable to some seriously stubborn food and burn stains. Try mixing a cup of vinegar with a cup of water in your dirty cookware. Use more if the pan is larger. Bring the mixture to a boil and let it sit a little while. After you’ve removed the pan from heat add a few tablespoons of baking soda and let it fizz out. Once you’ve rinsed and wiped the cookware down it should look like it came right off the store shelf.

7. Eliminate Stubborn Residue

Sometimes when you peel a label, sticker, or tape from a surface it leaves behind a stubborn mark of residue. Leftover adhesive marks aren’t easily removed by a simple watery scrub. Luckily for you white vinegar can take care of it.

Pour some vinegar into an empty spray bottle and cover the area affected by the adhesive. Let it soak for around 30 seconds before wiping it up with a cloth. The vinegar should act as a solvent to eliminate the marks with ease.

8. Prolong Plant Life

A vase full of flowers makes for beautiful decor but they seem to die fairly quickly. There are many different home remedies to prolong flower life. Vinegar stands as one of the most effective ways to preserve your vase plants and make them give the drooped ones a little extra life.

Instead of putting the flowers in just water, you’ll make a mixture of vinegar, water, and sugar for them to sit in. Combine two tablespoons of vinegar with a tablespoon of sugar in a vase and replace the flowers. The bouquet should stay healthier for a longer period of time.

9. Fix Dirty Glasses

If the lenses of your prescription glasses or sunglasses keep dirtying on you, a little bit of white vinegar can help. Apply a small amount of the vinegar to the lenses and let it sit a few seconds. Rub it off gently with a soft cloth and the smudges and stains will disappear leaving your glasses clear and shiny.

10. Get Rid of Lime Deposits in a Tea Kettle

This is a common issue as most people use tap water, and after the water had been boiled and set, the minerals from the water collect on the kettle. You can overcome this issue by adding 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar to the water and letting it sit overnight. If more drastic action is needed, boil full-strength white distilled vinegar in the kettle a few minutes, let cool and rinse with plain water.

Holiday Food Safety Tips

The holiday season is a time when we’re often called on to make and take food to a variety of events. Now’s the perfect time to brush up on food safety tips to ensure that your celebrations don’t go awry.

The first thing to keep in mind is that some people are at greater risk of serious illness or even death from foodborne illness. Those at higher risk are infants, young children, pregnant women and their unborn babies, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems, such as those who’ve had a transplant or who have HIV/ AIDS, cancer, diabetes or kidney disease.

Here some tips to keep your feasts safe:

Clean : Use hot soapy water to wash your hands, utensils, and work surfaces (including cutting boards). Repeat this throughout your preparation to ensure you aren’t spreading bacteria around.

Separate : Keep raw meat and poultry separate from other foods (cooked or raw). Use separate cutting boards or platters for meats, fruits and vegetables, and other foods.

Cook : Use a food thermometer. Cook turkey and other poultry to an internal temperature of 165 F (145 F for other roasts, steaks, or chops). Take the temperature at the innermost part of the bird’s thigh and wing — and the thickest part of the breast. Stuffing should also be 165 F. Boil gravies, sauces and soups.

Keep it hot or cold: If serving buffet style, maintain safe temperatures. Keep hot foods hot (140 F or warmer) by using chafing dishes, slow cookers and warming trays. Keep cold foods cold (40 F or cooler) by nesting in bowls of ice.

Here are some safety tips if you’re going to be transporting food:

Cook food completely, to its safe cooking temperature. Don’t transport partially cooked foods.

Minimize temperature fluctuations. Remove food from the stove/oven just before leaving home. Carefully transfer food to a thermal container or slow cooker, wrap in heavy towels for extra insulation and place in a thermal tote or insulated bag. Use a cooler and/or ice to transport cold foods.

When you arrive, reheat hot foods to 165 degrees or boiling for liquids. Before serving, bring food up to the safe temperature (165 F). Get cold foods in to the refrigerator until ready for serve.

And finally, here’s how to safely handle leftovers:

Refrigerate all leftovers in shallow containers within 2 hours of serving (1 hour if the air temperature is above 90 F).

Properly stored leftovers can be kept for 3 to 4 days. But if in doubt, throw them out. Be sure to reheat leftovers to 165 F before serving.

Consider leaving leftovers with the host. By the time you reach home, the food likely will be the in the danger zone — between 40 F and 140 F — when bacteria can quickly multiple.

Top 13 Exercises to Strengthen Your Back and Reduce Back Pain (Including Detailed Illustrations)

Most people in the world will experience back pain at least once during their lives. I’m not talking just about lower back pain, but about upper back pain as well. I’ve written in the past about how to relieve back pain. My previous article was about what to do when you have a back pain but it’s far better to prevent the back pain from occurring! In this post I will teach you how to prevent back pain by doing 13 simple  exercises.

it’s important to emphasize that the back exercises listed below should be performed when you are pain free. If you experience pain, or have any injury or medical condition it is best not to do these exercises until you see your doctor, chiropractor or a physical therapist. They can guide you on the appropriate exercises for your condition.

The aim of these exercises is to improve spine mobility, stretch the muscles groups attached to the spine and improve their balance and strength.

To strengthen your back, try to perform some of the exercises listed below 2-3 times per day.

1. Cat stretch

This exercise is beneficial for the lower back. Arch your back up towards the ceiling and relax your neck while you deeply inhale. Hold for few seconds and then exhale, drop your chest towards the floor while maintaining firm abdominals and slightly raise your head. Repeat 10 times.

2. Bend knee to chest

This exercise is for the low back and stretches your hip muscles. Lie down on the floor and pull your knee towards your chest while keeping your tailbone on the floor. Hold each stretch for few seconds and repeat 3 times for each side.

3. Ankle over knee

This exercise is for the lower back and your hips. Lie down on the floor with both knees bent while keeping the tailbone on the floor. Place your left ankle the right leg’s knee and push your left knee down with you left hand. Hold for few seconds and repeat 3 times. Do the same exercise with the other leg.

4. Press up

Lay on the floor leaning on your bent forearms. Then press your hands to stretch your back. Try to tighten your abdominals while doing this exercise. Keep your head and neck in line with the rest of the spine. Hold for a few seconds, rest briefly and repeat 5-10 times.

5. Knee rolls

Lie on your back. Keep your knees bent and together. Your upper body should be relaxed and your chin slightly tucked in. Roll your knees to one side, as well as your pelvis, but make sure to keep both shoulders on the floor. Hold the stretch for one deep breath and return to the starting position. Repeat 5-10 times, alternating sides.

7. Raise your hips

Lie down on your back and place your hands alongside your body. Bend your legs and keep your feet flat on the floor. Your knees should be aligned with your toes. Lift your hips and back until only the base of your shoulder blades remains on the floor. Try to hold this position for 3 deep breaths. Lower your hips and repeat 5-10 times.

6. Pelvic tilts

This exercise stretches and strengthens the lower back. Lie on your back, bend your knees and keep your feet hip-width apart. Your upper body should be relaxed and your chin slightly tucked in. Now flatten your lower back on the floor and contract your stomach muscles. You do it by tilting your pelvis towards your heels. Hold for a few seconds then return to the starting position. Repeat 10-15 times.

8. Kneeling lunge stretch
This exercise stretches the muscles between the front of your thigh and the lumber vertebrae which are called hip flexor muscles. These muscles can pull the spine out of alignment if they are too tight. Position yourself as per the illustration while keeping yourself upright and not leaning forward. Stretch the front of your upper thigh but keep your hips even. Hold for few seconds and repeat on the other side.

9. Quad opposite arm-leg raise

Balance your body on your hands and knees, with hands located shoulder-width apart and slightly forward, and knees below your hips and slightly apart. Lengthen your right leg and left hand simultaneously. Return to the base position and do the same with the other side (Lengthen your left leg and right hand simultaneously).

10. Side plank
Lie on your right side, with straight legs, resting on your right forearm. Your elbow should be directly under your shoulder. Gently contract your abdominals and lift your hips off the floor, maintaining straight line. Keep your neck in line with your spine. Hold 20 to 40 seconds and lower. Repeat two to three times, alternating sides. If you find it too difficult, start with bent knees.

11. Front Bridge exercise

This exercise is great for strengthening you core muscles. Suck your belly button and keep your body as straight as possible without locking your knees. Continue to breath and don’t hold your breath. Hold yourself in this position as long as you can, then rest. Repeat 2-3 times. Gradually extend the time of holding yourself in the position.

12. Shoulder blade stretch

Sit on a chair or a stool while maintaining good posture, then pull your shoulder blades backwards . Hold for a few seconds and then relax. Repeat 5 times.

13. Chin Tuck Exercise

As many of us age, and due to medical conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and osteoporosis, there is a tendency to let the posture go. Our upper back begins to round forward, which then pushes our neck and head forward and out of proper alignment. This can lead to chronic neck and back pain. Do this exercise while sitting straight on a chair without tipping your head in any direction, pull your chin and head straight back. You will feel a stretch at the back of your neck. Relax the chin back forward to a neutral position. Repeat for 8-10 repetitions. You can use this exercise throughout the day to maintain good posture.

10 Best Air Filtering House Plants, According to NASA

Using space station technology to ensure the safety of your home may be easier than you thought. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration conducted the NASA Clean Air Study to demonstrate the effectiveness of particular plants to purify air.
As homes become more insulated and efficient, they also make it easier to trap indoor air pollutants. Chemicals like benzene, formaldehyde, and ammonia can come from household items and pollute your home’s atmosphere without any visual warning.

Neglecting the quality of the air you breathe on a daily basis could result in serious consequences. Illness, allergies, asthma and frequent headaches are just a few of many inconveniences that come from airborne particles floating around your home. Air pollution is also one of the reasons the can affect your digestive system.

There’s no need to dish out hundreds of dollars on expensive appliances when you’ve got Mother Nature. According to NASA there are plenty of plants that soak up harmful particles in the air and release fresh oxygen – all while adding a decorative touch.

Where does it all come from?
One of the scariest things about indoor air pollution is the seemingly harmless nature of its many sources. Listed below are some of the most common ways a home can become polluted.

• Glues and Adhesives
• Carpets (especially new carpets)
• Chemicals in household cleaners (instead of using poisonous household cleaners you can make your own natural household cleaners)
• Foam insulation materials
• Paint
• Pressed-wood products (plywood, particle board, and medium-density fiberboard)
If plants are good enough for the pioneers of space travel than they must be doing something right. They also might spark a new found hobby of gardening as well! The plants listed below are 10 of the most effective air filters Mother Nature has to offer.

1. English Ivy (Hedera Helix)

The English Ivy is ideal for pots because its invasive nature allows it to spread easily. Research found it to be particularly useful in eliminating airborne fecal-matter particles. The plant is also great for a family with smokers in it. It’s ability to soak up carcinogens from second-hand smoke helps to purify small areas. It’s also versatile when it comes to growing conditions and doesn’t require much maintenance.

2. Golden Pothos (Epipremnum Aureum)
NASA considered this plant one of the most effective choices for eliminating formaldehyde. People that have struggled to keep plants alive can rejoice – this one is incredibly hard to kill. It doubles as an effective eliminator of carbon monoxide as well. The vines grow fairly quickly and look great suspended from elevated areas.

3. Boston Fern (Nephrolepis Exalta Bostoniensis)
This lush plant functions really well as a natural air humidifier. While it’s busy adding humidity to the environment it also does a great job eliminating formaldehyde. Its large feathered ferns span as large as 5 feet and allow just a single plant to have a noticeable impact.

4. Dracaena (Dracaena Deremensis)
The long striped leaves of this plant can easily thrive indoors with only small amounts of sunlight and moderate watering. It’s an excellent way to eliminate trichloroethylene that comes from solvents and varnishes. A single plant can grow over ten feet tall, but pruning will keep it short if you prefer.

5. Bamboo Palm (Chamaedorea Elegans)
The Bamboo Palm can easily fit into smaller areas with indirect lighting. NASA found it to be one of the best air filters for benzene and trichloroethylene, and a great humidifier. This palm is a bit smaller than others and easy to grow in shady areas. It releases a good deal of moisture into the air and is considerably resistant to insect infestation.

6. Dragon Tree (Dracaena Marginata)

This plant is a widely popular option for office spaces and homes for its attractive look and effective purifying power. It pulls xylene – a chemical released from car exhaust, paints, and cigarettes – from the air with little need for maintenance. It can also be potted together and trained to grow into a braid for visual appeal and added purification.

7. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
The Peace Lily is one of the most visually appealing plants on the list with its unique white flowers. It boasts one of the highest transpiration rates on the list as well. Use it to remove trichloroethylene, benzene, acetone, and alcohols from the air. Just be cautious of the plants high toxicity and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

8. Lady Palm (Rhapis Excelsa)
The Lady Palm requires a lot of watering during the spring and summer but makes up for it with its heavy resistance to insects. The lush leaves of this palm grow thick and with rich color without much effort. Its said to be a versatile and effective filter for multiple indoor pollutants.

9. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum Comosum)
The Spider Plant requires natural light but shouldn’t be exposed directly to the sun. It thrives in moist environments with bi-weekly watering and grows at impressive speeds. Owners prefer to place these plants near the fireplace and kitchen where carbon monoxide may build.

10. Snake Plant (Sansevieria Trifasciata)

The Snake Plant is unique in that it sucks in carbon dioxide and releases oxygen during the night. Many people chose to keep it in their bedroom or carpeted living room. It’s simple to take care of and prevents the formaldehyde that leaks from your carpet and wood furniture from sticking around the air.

If you have pets than you should be aware that most indoor plants aren’t safe for pet consumption. If you plan on growing plants in or outside of your home you should be aware of their toxicity. You can consult with your vet and see how it may affect your dog, cat, or any other animal that may consume it.
