Top 5 Medicinal Uses for Tea Tree Oil

Are you one of the many people who suffer from acne, dandruff, athlete’s foot, toenail fungus or yeast infection? I barely know anyone who doesn’t suffer from one of those nuisances. Well, you will be surprised to know that tea tree oil can help you to get rid of all these nuisances.

Somewhere in the wilderness of Australia lays a special plant. At first glance you might simply dismiss this plant as just another leafy instance of vegetation. But the melaluca alternifolia is much more than that. Using steam distillation, essential oil is extracted from its leaves and used as a natural health remedy. As a matter of fact, with the wide amount of natural health benefits the tea tree oil yields this plant is in a class of its own.

A Natural and Safe Oil Loaded With Benefits

So what exactly can tea tree oil do for you? A better question would be what CAN’T tea tree oil do for you. That might have sounded cliché but this oil has received tons of attention for it’s usefulness in a variety of health issues ranging from lice to boils.

The terpenoids in the oil are believed to be the main reason behind its potent antimicrobial effects. These are organic chemicals that are used extensively for their aromatic qualities. They play a role in traditional herbal remedies and are under investigation for antibacterial and other pharmaceutical functions. The only science you have to understand however, is the impressive numbers backing the oil and its effects. Since it is an emerging natural health supplement, there have been many tests conducted to support the usefulness of this oil.

If we elaborated on all the benefits of this oil, it may take all day. For that reason, we’re going to take a look at four of the most effective and useful ways to use tea tree oil as a natural solution for common annoyances:

Acne

Almost everyone knows the perils of acne. It’s no fun waking up in the morning to stubborn bumps and blemishes that sneak on to our skin while we are sleeping. Going straight for the “pimple pop” strategy is actually a lot worse for you than you may think. It spreads bacteria and exposes your pores for an even larger spread of acne.

If acne is an unwelcome room-mate in your life, let tea tree oil be the nightmarish landlord that drives it out. In several medical tests using tea tree oil, dermatologists found that the oil can help alleviate acne symptoms with speed and prevent future infection. Tea tree oil can be applied directly to pimples with a cotton swab for an effective and natural acne treatment. Leave for a few hours or overnight. If you find that pure, undiluted tea tree oil is a little too harsh or drying on your skin, simply mix a couple of drops of tea tree oil into a few teaspoons of aloe vera gel or carrier oil or honey and apply directly onto the pimple you wish to get rid of. Honey also contains antibacterial properties and promotes skin healing. The tea tree oil fights away the bacteria and after a few days you will notice your acne dissipating without having to spread the infection.

Dandruff

So you have conquered your morning routine. Fresh out of the shower, dressed in your clothes, and ready to face the day you realize that there is one small problem. Despite your grooming efforts there is unsightly dandruff flaking onto your shoulders and an itchy scalp begging to be scratched. What do you do when anti-dandruff shampoo simply isn’t cutting it? The antimicrobial effects of tea tree oil combined with a cooling sensation and crisp smell will make the perfect anti-dandruff shampoo.

As a dandruff prone individual, I know the pain of dry and itchy scalp. After trying some of the most expensive shampoo treatments I noticed the persistent flakes didn’t plan on going anywhere. If you want an edge in defeating your dandruff for good, try incorporating tea tree oil shampoo into your morning routine. Shampoos with at least 5% tea tree oil have been shown to effectively treat dandruff. Another option is to buy tea tree essential oil on its own and add it to your regular shampoo. To add the oil to your existing shampoo, add 10 drops for every eight ounces of shampoo in the bottle. Then shake the shampoo bottle to distribute the tea tree oil thoroughly. Rub the tea tree oil shampoo into your scalp and let sit for 5 minutes. Rinse with water, repeating once per day. It goes beyond the standard dandruff solution to give you soothing itch relief and reduce flakes in only a matter of days. Find more natural dandruff treatments here.

Athlete’s Foot

You don’t have to be an athlete to know how annoying this condition is. It leaves your feet uncomfortable with itches and irritating burning sensations. As it develops in between your toes, this infection reminds you of its presence with every stinging step. The “jock itch” can be quite the bully on your feet, but tea tree oil is the principle that will give it discipline.

A recent study took over a hundred people experiencing problems with athlete’s foot and made one section try tea tree oil while the others received a placebo. After several weeks of consistent application, the people that used the tea tree oil on their feet saw a significant reduction in their symptoms. It provided them with soothing relief and fungus fighting properties at the same time. Apply a light coating to the affected area two or three times a day, and continue to apply it for two weeks after signs of the infection have disappeared to make sure the fungus is eradicated.

Toenail Fungus Infections

The sound of this problem alone simply isn’t pretty. It’s also much more common than you may think. People with toenail fungus suffer from discolored nails, thick crumbling expansion, and even pain from severe infection. Toenail fungus is like a swift and hard to catch criminal of the feet. Tea tree oil serves as the police officer that puts it behind bars.

Recent controlled trials using tea tree oil show promising opportunity for people suffering from stubborn toenail infections. This is one of the few problems that uses 100% tea tree oil for maximum results. After several months of testing, doctors found that tea tree oil was on par with the results seen after using standard topical antifungal treatments. Why use medical treatments with mystery ingredients when there is an all natural alternative that is just as effective? Paint the oil on the affected nails twice a day for at least two months. The nail has to grow out for the fungus to be eradicated, so you may not see results for a several months. You can find another simple and effective cure for toenail fungus in a previous post.

Vaginal Yeast Infection

Dilute tea tree essential oil and soak a tampon in it. Keep it in the vagina overnight. Its antiseptic properties are excellent for treating infections. I’ve written in the past an article on how to treat yeast infections naturally where you can find more information. If you are interested to learn more about essential oils you can find useful information in my e-book Magical Aromatherapy. This e-book will help you to discover the power of essential oils and the most effective ways to use them.

Give it a Chance

There are many sceptics when it comes to natural health treatments. They search tirelessly for “cutting edge” cures to life’s most irritating problems without realizing that there is a far more simple solution. You don’t have to turn to processed substances loaded with mystery chemicals to see results. Tea tree oil extracted from the melaluca alternifolia has experienced an exponential amount of interest amongst natural health enthusiasts in recent years for one reason: it works. As a safe, natural, and affordable alternative, there is practically no reason for you not to give it a try.

Home Remedies for Heartburn

Natural home remedies for heartburn
When stomach acid backs up into your esophagus, you feel a burning pain. Large meals as well as certain foods can lead to heartburn. You’re more likely to have heartburn if you’re pregnant, overweight or a smoker, or if you have a condition called hiatal hernia. Some medications, including aspirin, certain antibiotics and some antidepressants and sedatives, may aggravate heartburn. Try some of these natural home remedies to relieve your heartburn symptoms.

What you can do for heartburn

As soon as you feel the telltale flicker of heartburn, drink a 250 mL glass of water. It will wash the acid back down your esophagus into your stomach.
Saliva helps neutralize stomach acid. So chew a piece of sugarless gum, suck on a candy or daydream about juicy steaks or buttery lobster—whatever it takes to get you to generate and swallow extra saliva.

Baking soda is alkaline, so it neutralizes stomach acid. Mix a half-teaspoon of baking soda and a few drops of lemon juice in a half-cup of warm water. Don’t drink the baking soda by itself. You need the lemon juice to dispel some of the gas baking soda creates in the stomach when it comes in contact with stomach acid—there have been cases where baking soda produced such a rapid internal reaction that it ruptured the stomach.

The juices of vegetables like carrots, cucumbers, radishes, or beets help to tame the acid in the stomach due to their alkaline nature. Feel free to add a pinch of salt and pepper for flavour. If juicing vegetables is inconvenient or strange to you, just eat some raw vegetables.

No matter how terrible you feel, stay upright. Gravity is a powerful force, and if you’re standing, the earth’s pull helps keep acid in your stomach. Avoid bending over after a meal, and definitely don’t lie down.
If nighttime heartburn plagues you, eat meals at least two to three hours before you turn in. The added time will give acid levels a chance to decrease before you lie down.

You might also elevate the head of your bed 10 to 15 centimetres with large wooden blocks. When you’re tilted at an angle while sleeping, gravity helps keep acid in the stomach.

Try sleeping on your left side. When you lie on your left side, the stomach hangs down and fluids pool along the greater curvature, away from the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the thick ring of muscle that separates the stomach from the esophagus and keeps stomach acid where it belongs. Pooled fluids stay farther away from the esophagus.
Eat smaller, more frequent meals to minimize the production of stomach acid. And avoid eating too much in one sitting; doing so can force open the LES.
If you haven’t done so already, quit smoking. Research shows that smoking relaxes the LES.

A natural boost forheartburn treatment
To make a heartburn-easing tea, add 1 teaspoon of freshly grated gingerroot to 1 cup of boiling water, steep for 10 minutes, and drink. Long used to quell the nausea caused by motion sickness, ginger also helps to relax the muscles that line the walls of the esophagus, so stomach acid doesn’t get pushed upward.
A tea made from anise, caraway, or fennel seed can also ease the burn, according to herbalists. Add 2 teaspoons of any of them to 1 cup of boiling water, steep for 10 minutes, strain and drink.

Practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine, the traditional medicine of India, prescribe teas made of crushed cinnamon or cardamom to cool the heat of heartburn. Add 1 teaspoon of either crushed or powdered herb to 1 cup boiling water, steep, strain and drink.

Marshmallow root is one of the oldest remedies known for heartburn. It produces a gooey, starchy substance called mucilage, which coats and protects the mucous membranes of your esophagus—just what you need when you feel like it’s on fire. Stir 1 teaspoon powdered marshmallow root into 1 cup water and sip it. Drink three or four cups a day.

You can make a similar soothing drink from slippery elm. Add one teaspoon of the powder to a cup of hot water, and drink a few cups throughout the day.
A form of licorice called DGL also provides heartburn-soothing mucilage. Take two or three chewable wafers three times daily on an empty stomach.
