Three Interesting Facts About Diabetes

#1 If you've been diagnosed with prediabetes, you may never develop full-blown diabetes.

If the amount of glucose (sugar) found in your blood is higher than it should be, then your doctor may classify you as having prediabetes, or impaired glucose tolerance. This diagnosis may mean that you are right around the corner from experiencing full-blown diabetes, but there are reasonable ways that you can change this from happening.

The American Diabetes Association suggests losing weight, watching your diet and exercising daily to prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. These healthy lifestyle choices can help prevent the development of diabetes by up to 58%.

For some people, shedding only 10-15 pounds may be enough to reverse a diagnosis of prediabetes or diabetes. Weight loss occurs when you expend more calories than consumed.

#2 Exercise May Be More Beneficial Than Dieting Alone

A person that has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes either doesn't process insulin properly or their body doesn't produce enough of it. Either way, exercise is the best defense against diabetes because it allows the body to control blood glucose levels more effectively by clearing away glucose build-up from the blood.

#3 Prediabetics and Diabetics Should Also Avoid Eating Simple Carbohydrates

Many diabetics believe they should steer clear from all sweets as a means to control diabetes. Although this is effective, diabetics should also avoid consuming simple carbohydrates such as white bread, bagels and pretzels. These simple carbohdrates will quickly turn into glucose once they hit the bloodstream. Carbohydrates will cause the blood sugar to spike out of control in the same manner that eating a slice of German chocolate cake will.

It's important for diabetics to eat a low-carbohydrate diet, choosing only whole-wheat / whole-grain products to fuel the body.
